Synopsis
In '1917' (2019), two young British soldiers, Schofield and Blake, are given a seemingly impossible mission during the height of World War I. They must cross enemy territory to deliver a message that could potentially save 1,600 of their fellow soldiers from walking into a deadly trap.
Why Watch It
Sam Mendes orchestrates a masterclass in sustained tension with a deceptively simple premise: two soldiers race across No Man's Land to stop a doomed offensive. Shot to feel like one unbroken take, the film's technical audacity becomes inseparable from its emotional impact, immersing you in the fog, mud, and chaos of WWI. Roger Deakins' cinematography transforms the trenches into a landscape of haunting beauty, making every frame a testament to both human suffering and cinematic ambition.
