Synopsis
In this 1991 romantic comedy-fantasy, Daniel Miller dies in a car accident and arrives in Judgment City, a pleasant afterlife way station where souls must defend their earthly decisions before moving forward or returning to Earth. While facing his trial, Daniel falls in love with Julia, a woman whose courageous life stands in stark contrast to his own fear-driven choices. Written and directed by Albert Brooks, the film is a witty meditation on fear, personal growth, and the courage it takes to truly live.
Why Watch It
Albert Brooks crafts a witty, unexpectedly tender comedy about confronting your own choices, where the afterlife becomes a mirror for examining how fear shapes a life. Meryl Streep's luminous presence and Brooks' gentle philosophical humor balance perfectly, creating something that's both funny and genuinely moving. It's a film that lingers—less interested in punchlines than in what makes us human.
