Synopsis

Enter the Void is a visually hallucinogenic odyssey directed by Gaspar Noé, following Oscar, an American drug dealer in Tokyo whose spirit drifts through the neon-lit city after he is shot by police. Told entirely through a first-person and floating third-person perspective, the film blurs the boundaries between life, death, and rebirth. Deeply influenced by the Tibetan Book of the Dead, it is a mesmerizing and deeply controversial meditation on love, loss, and the cycle of existence.

Why Watch It
Gaspar Noé constructs a hypnotic descent through Tokyo's neon-soaked underworld using disorienting first-person perspective and dazzling visual effects that blur the line between life and afterlife. The film's audacious formal experiment—all neon halos, vertiginous camera work, and synth-heavy soundscape—creates an immersive, almost hallucinogenic experience that prioritizes sensory overwhelm over narrative clarity. It's cinema as pure visual and visceral provocation, demanding viewers surrender to its nightmarish aesthetic rather than follow a conventional story.
