Why Watch It
Jules Dassin's expressionist noir transforms the London underworld into a labyrinth of shadows and desperation, where Richard Widmark's desperate protagonist chases a dream that devours him whole. The film's kinetic energy and claustrophobic visuals create a sense of inevitable doom that feels remarkably modern, while its portrait of hustlers and hustled remains savagely relevant.
