Synopsis

Robert Eggers' second feature pits Robert Pattinson and Willem Dafoe against weather, mythology, and each other inside a hermetically sealed two-hander. The texture — granular black-and-white, antique lenses, foghorn drones — turns every scene into a Melville hallucination.

Did You Know?
  • Shot on black-and-white 35mm with vintage Petzval lenses.
  • Aspect ratio is the rarely-used 1.19:1, mimicking early sound-era cinema.
  • Pattinson and Dafoe drank real alcohol in some scenes per Eggers' request.
  • Most dialogue was lifted from Herman Melville and 19th-century New England logs.
  • Pattinson called it the worst experience of his life — meant as a compliment.
Iconic Quotes
  • "Why'd ya spill yer beans?"
  • "Should pale death, with treble dread, make the ocean caves our bed!"
  • "Damn ye!"
  • "You like me lobster?"
  • "Yer fond of me lobster, ain't ye?"
Editorial

Why Eltorama recommends this film

Robert Eggers traps two men on a rock with a 1.19:1 aspect ratio and 1890s dialect and lets the screen distort until myth, masturbation, and madness blur completely.
