Synopsis

The Monster (Il Mostro) is a 1994 Italian comedy directed by and starring Roberto Benigni, in which a bumbling, accident-prone man named Loris becomes the prime suspect in a serial killer investigation due to a series of hilarious misunderstandings. Desperate to catch the criminal, police send an undercover female officer to provoke him, leading to increasingly absurd situations. The film is a masterclass in physical comedy and was a record-breaking commercial success in Italy.

Why Watch It
Benigni's gleeful absurdism turns a mistaken-identity premise into anarchic comedy gold, with the director's rubber-faced physical comedy colliding hilariously against the premise's dark setup. Jessica's relentless attempts to entrap an innocent man generate mounting surreal chaos that subverts every expectation of the genre. A wildly inventive, blackly comic romp that showcases why Benigni remains one of cinema's most fearlessly playful performers.
