Synopsis
Set in the mid-1800s, 'The Piano' follows Ada McGrath, a mute Scottish pianist who is sent to colonial New Zealand for an arranged marriage, bringing only her daughter and her cherished piano. When her cold husband abandons the instrument on the beach, Ada enters a passionate and dangerous bargain with a local settler named Baines. Directed by Jane Campion, the film is a haunting exploration of female desire, autonomy, and the power of nonverbal expression.
Why Watch It
Jane Campion orchestrates a sensual, visually ravishing portrait of desire and autonomy through Holly Hunter's extraordinary silent performance—communication flows through her fingers on ivory keys and across storm-dark New Zealand landscapes. The film subverts period drama conventions with its frank eroticism and feminist undercurrents, anchored by Michael Nyman's hypnotic score that becomes as essential as dialogue.
