Synopsis

Jeff and Michael Zimbalist track Colombia's golden football generation through the parallel rises and falls of two unrelated Escobars — Pablo, the cartel boss whose drug money built the league, and Andrés, the defender whose own goal against the US sealed his country's elimination and led directly to his execution in a Medellín parking lot. The most damning thing the film does is refuse to treat the two stories as separate.

Why Watch It
Refuses to separate Colombian football from Colombian cocaine and shows how an own goal can cost a life when the stakes are no longer just sporting.

Why Eltorama recommends this film

ESPN's 30 for 30 binds Pablo Escobar's cartel money to defender Andrés Escobar's own goal at USA '94, executed twelve days later in a Medellín parking lot. Football as the highest stakes any sport has carried on film.
