Synopsis

In this 2006 remake directed by Neil LaBute, Nicolas Cage stars as Edward Malus, a California highway patrol officer who travels to a remote island to search for his missing daughter. The island is controlled by an eerie matriarchal cult with disturbing pagan rituals, leading Edward toward a terrifying fate. Despite critical failure, the film gained legendary cult status largely due to Cage's wildly over-the-top performance.

Why Watch It
Nicolas Cage delivers a memorably unhinged performance as a man unraveling in the face of an island's cryptic rituals and hostile secrets. Neil LaBute constructs a creeping sense of dread through deliberate pacing and an unsettling aesthetic that turns pastoral beauty into something sinister. The film's wildly divisive reputation—equal parts fascinating misfire and genuinely eerie—makes it essential viewing for anyone curious about how spectacularly ambitious horror can derail.
