Synopsis
True Grit follows fourteen-year-old Mattie Ross, who hires the hard-drinking, one-eyed U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn to track down her father's killer, Tom Chaney, in the dangerous Indian Territory. Joined by a Texas Ranger named LaBoeuf, the unlikely trio embarks on a perilous journey through the rugged frontier. The Coen Brothers' adaptation is both a faithful homage to the classic Western genre and a sharp, darkly humorous tale of justice, courage, and determination.
Why Watch It
The Coens transform a Western revenge tale into a character study anchored by Hailee Steinfeld's electrifying performance as a girl whose moral certainty proves sharper than any gunslinger's aim. Jeff Bridges brings weathered humanity to the Marshal, creating a dynamic that crackles with both humor and genuine tenderness. It's a film that honors genre conventions while carving out something entirely its own—language-rich, purposeful, and defiantly unsentimental.
